Portsmouth is a large port city in the county of Hampshire on the south coast of England. Located mainly on Portsea Island with a population of 205,400, it is the UK’s only island city, and is also the only city in the British Isles with a greater population density than London.
Situated 64 miles (103 km) south-west of London and 19 miles (31 km) south-east of Southampton, Portsmouth forms part of the South Hampshire built-up area, which also covers Southampton and the towns of Havant, Waterlooville, Eastleigh, Fareham and Gosport.
With approximately 860,000 residents, it is the 6th largest urban area in England and the largest in South East England.
