Since 6 April 2016, the requirement to seek planning permission to convert office blocks to residential use has been removed.
These permitted development rights, which allow the change of use, mean that empty and often ugly commercial office blocks can be sympathetically developed and renovated to provide residential accomodation.
Although the planning permission requirement has been lifted, the process of conversion can still be fraught with complications and issues.
